The Website Success Stool

What is the purpose of your business?

As addressed in Painful Experience # 10, there are actually three agendas that you need to keep in balance when building your first business as well as your first website. Even if you are a seasoned entrepreneur, you should use this model to stabilize and balance any number of businesses. Many successful entrepreneurs use this method, knowingly or unknowingly, to drive forward their organizations.

  1. The Technical Agenda: (fixated on high rankings and algorithms as well as server side issues.)

  2. The Direct Response Agenda: (fixated on getting your prospects turned into customers and responding to your offer.)
  3. The Educational Agenda: (fixated on educating and providing the most useful information on the internet about a keyword, product, or service.)

The above “success stool” diagram illustrates the inevitable tension between these three agendas.

The dynamic tension between these three agendas often wreaks havoc on a business organization that does not understand the differences between each agenda.

This lack of knowledge is expensive!

You also dont want to hire out these agendas to someone who will turn them into a “black box” processes that you will never understand and never control. (This is a terrible feeling when you suddenly realized you are trapped by your own technology. You should make sure that no single staff member has the only key to any vital part of your business!)
